Starting point
Goma, located on the border with Rwanda, is a transit city for armed groups like the LRA, making it one of the most dangerous areas in the world. Due to the number of displaced people seeking refuge in this city, its population has tripled in just a few years. Furthermore, the unemployment rate reaches 80%. All of this has led to increasingly precarious living conditions for its inhabitants, with women and children being the most vulnerable groups.
Objective
The project’s goal is to provide comprehensive support to 50 children under the age of 12 in extremely vulnerable situations, giving them the opportunity to reintegrate into society after being removed from their families for inability to care for them.
What is the project about
CODESPA, in collaboration with the local organization Don Bosco Ngangi, offers these children a safe environment where their physical and mental health is guaranteed. To this end, they are housed in Don Bosco Shelters, where not only their basic needs for maintenance and medical care are met, but also access to basic education. Throughout this process, they are supported, and the community and the children’s families are involved to facilitate their reintegration into their communities.
Until the age of 18, the DBNG Centers can accommodate these children, who will be trained in the most in-demand trades in Goma (mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, metalworkers) to ensure their socioeconomic integration upon leaving these centers.
