Training for young people in carpentry and masonry for beehive construction in the Batéké Plateau region, Kinshasa, DR Congo.
- Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- Location: Ibi Village, Batéké Plateau Region, Kinshasa Province.
- Duration: March 2017 to April 2018.
- Participants: 40 young people, ages 18 to 25, unemployed and living in poverty.
- Area of Specialization: Vocational Training and Microentrepreneurship, Rural Market Development.
Starting point
Kinshasa province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing severe food shortages due to the armed conflict of recent years, with the resulting rise in the prices of basic foodstuffs. This situation has led to the migration of the rural population to the outskirts of Kinshasa, where they live in very precarious conditions.
Objective
To train young people to acquire carpentry and masonry skills so they can pursue a trade and reverse the population migration to the outskirts of the capital.
What is the project about
As a precursor to this project, four cooperatives—formed by women beekeepers—were created to process and distribute local products, specifically honey. Its sale allows them to earn an income and also use it as a food product to supplement their diet.
Since beehives are very expensive, 40 young people from the same community will be trained in carpentry and masonry to be able to manufacture them at fair prices and meet families’ demand for other products (doors, windows, etc.). In anticipation of a progressive increase in the need for skilled labor for the construction of rural homes, it is expected that 100% of the trained young people will find employment upon completion of the courses.
