Starting point

Since 2013, the CODESPA Foundation and Barcelona City Council have been working with the Tetouan Urban Commune to activate and strengthen the governance of its Social Action, Sociocultural, and Sports Animation Division. In recent years, it has been equipped with facilities to provide services to young people, with the aim of promoting the integration of the city’s most disadvantaged groups.

Objective

Strengthen the governance capacities of the Tetouan Commune and civil society organizations to promote the socioeconomic inclusion and participation of young people in Moroccan society. Specifically, promote local democratic governance and the participation of this group to foster a culture of equality and human rights.

What is the project about

The solution focuses on empowering the Tetouan Urban Commune, civil society organizations, and groups representing Tetouan’s youth, as well as the young people themselves. This is achieved through training, support, and cascading impact at three levels:

  • Strengthening the capacities of the Tetuán Municipality, in its Social Action Division;
  • Support for Civil Society Organizations, to which the Municipality delegates the provision of sociocultural and educational sports services;
  • Training and support for young people so they can exercise future leadership.

In this way, not only is the capacity building of each stakeholder guaranteed, but also the model’s appropriation and replicability.

Responding to the needs of youth is responding to the needs of one of the key groups in municipal governance today, but, above all, it is fundamental to the fair, inclusive, and sustainable development of the city of Tetouan.
