Rehabilitation of the infrastructure of the Monkole Maternity and Child Hospital in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Starting point

The maternal mortality rate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the highest in the world. The Monkole Hospital cares for expectant mothers and newborns from various surrounding areas where the mortality rate is very high and the levels of poverty and socioeconomic vulnerability are alarming.

This situation is a consequence of a health system suffering from a chronic shortage of human resources and infrastructure, the multiple political crises that have plagued the country for decades, as well as the collapse of its economy.

Aim

This infrastructure rehabilitation project at the Monkole Health Centre aims to improve the health of women and their children. 

What the project is about

The strengthening of the maternity ward infrastructure at the Monkole Hospital will allow pregnant women to be cared for in a professional, safe manner, respecting their privacy. The renovation and improvement of the maternity ward and gynecology and obstetrics surgery room will allow for the appropriate treatment of serious cases requiring surgery. It will also facilitate the organization of work for the medical and nursing staff in the Monkole Gynecology and Obstetrics Department.

The sustainability of the impact of the improvements will be achieved thanks to the human resources available at Monkole: experienced medical and healthcare staff and a qualified technical team (SGx) responsible for the maintenance of the hospital infrastructure.
