Starting point

Given the context of unequal rights between men and women in Morocco, women have the highest rates of illiteracy, income level, domestic violence, and social exclusion, which explains why they suffer the most from the effects of poverty.

In Tetouan, women have an unemployment rate of 55.2% and represent 60% of the informal economy, earning less and exacerbating their vulnerability. Furthermore, they constitute the largest group of older adults and are more likely to live alone and have less access to the internet or mobile phones, increasing their risk of social exclusion.

Another factor to consider is that Morocco is characterized by being both a country of emigration and transit, and more recently, a land of asylum and settlement for immigrants. In this context, the situation of vulnerability is of greater concern for migrant women (of sub-Saharan origin), who lack a supportive social and family structure.

Objective

Comprehensive support for young Moroccans and sub-Saharan Africans, women with children, victims of social exclusion and poverty, living on the streets of Tetouan, to facilitate their social and economic reintegration and access to a decent livelihood.

What is the project about

CODESPA is carrying out this project together with its local partner, APISF (Association for the Protection of Children and Family Awareness), which is dedicated to caring for people in extremely vulnerable situations, especially children and young people who have been abandoned by their families and single mothers.

Through the project, the participants, who are outside the city of Tetouan’s social protection system, will receive comprehensive care in APISF Shelters, where they will have housing, food, and medical and psychosocial care to help them recover physically and emotionally.

In addition, various educational programs will be offered based on the educational level of the young women and girls sheltered: basic education courses to enable them to enroll in school; literacy training for young women and girls; and vocational and entrepreneurship training to enable them to find employment and/or start a small business.

The training programs will be selected based on the career opportunities for the in-demand trades in Tetouan. The most common are hairdressing, mechanics, electricity, electricity in the construction sector, and pastry making.

The purpose of this intervention is to promote access to employment and/or self-employment for these young women and men by promoting training, professional integration, and/or the creation of long-term employment, enabling them to generate income and become self-sufficient.
