International STEM Day: the progress of our educational project in Cartago, Colombia\n<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

On November 8th, we celebrate International STEM Day, a date that invites us to recognize the importance of these fields for progress and innovation. At CODESPA, we believe that education is a powerful tool for transforming lives<\/strong>, creating opportunities, and building a more just future.<\/p>


In Cartago<\/strong>, in northern Valle del Cauca (Colombia), this commitment is becoming a reality through the Educational Quality Improvement Program for Vulnerable Children and Adolescents in Cartago<\/a>, funded by the \u201cla Caixa\u201d Foundation<\/strong>. Since December 2024, we have been working with the Juan XXIII Diocesan Educational Institution<\/strong> to help 455 students<\/strong>, aged 4 to 18, strengthen their STEM<\/strong> (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge, develop their entrepreneurial spirit, and learn values \u200b\u200bsuch as peace and collaboration.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

STEM: Learn by doing <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Over the past few months, the school has undergone a true transformation. The new digital STEM lab<\/strong> is now up and running: a space where children can experiment, observe, and learn<\/strong> with their own hands. It has been equipped with technological tools, connectivity, and educational software, and a STEM teaching committee coordinates the pedagogical activities<\/strong>, adapting learning guides and administering diagnostic tests to determine each student’s starting point.

The results are beginning to show in the classrooms, and for a few hours, the children become budding scientists, engineers, and creators.

In one of the classes, themed “Sides, Vertices, Edges\u2026 The 3 Clues to Shape!”, the youngest students explore geometric figures through play. A yellow sphere, a red cone, or a colorful cube become tools for understanding space and shapes. Amid laughter and curiosity, the students learn to recognize the basic elements of geometry: the foundation of logical and mathematical thinking.<\/p>

In another session, called \u201cFun Science: Understanding Simple Machines,\u201d fourth-grade students create pulleys and models using cardboard, modeling clay, and tape. As they work, they discover how forces and mechanisms facilitate movement. It’s an active learning experience that combines creativity and technical knowledge and fosters collaboration in the classroom.

They also had their first experience in the chemistry lab<\/strong>. Equipped with lab coats, gloves, and masks, the students experimented with the states of matter and chemical reactions, gaining a practical understanding of concepts they previously only encountered in books. For example, they learned how to make homemade soap.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Enterpreneurship and the Future <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The project not only aims to introduce children to science, but also to help teenagers develop skills for employment and entrepreneurship.<\/strong><\/p>

These days, the school is preparing for a highly anticipated event: the \u201cFuture Creators\u201d Business Fair<\/strong>, where students will present their business ideas, ranging from products made with recycled materials to digital initiatives. These activities reinforce creativity, communication, and self-confidence.

\u201cEvery product has a story,\u201d says the fair’s poster. And every story is that of a young person who is beginning to believe in their potential to transform their environment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Beyond the Classroom: Education for Peace <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

STEM education in Cartago is not limited to technical subjects. The program also includes sessions on Children’s Rights and a Culture of Peace<\/strong>, because learning science and technology must go hand in hand with learning values. In a context where violence and inequality continue to mark the lives of many young people, promoting coexistence, tolerance, and respect<\/strong> is as important as teaching mathematics or robotics.<\/p>

Every day, curiosity, creativity, and hope fill the classrooms of the Juan XXIII Center. Children discover how simple machines work, how elements are mixed, and how an idea can become a real project.<\/p>

Because investing in STEM education not only prepares students for the jobs of the future: it gives them the tools to dream, to build solutions, to create. <\/p>

On this International STEM Day<\/strong>, we celebrate the progress of this project, which is already transforming education in Cartago. We thank the “la Caixa” Foundation for making it possible, and the teachers, families, and students for their commitment and enthusiasm.
